The next health care battle: Florida’s kids

Thu, 08/10/2017 - 7:01pm

You’d think funding health coverage for millions of children would be at the top of the list for our elected representatives. Think again. If President Trump gets his way in Congress, children's’ health care is on the chopping block.

I’m writing today, not only as the director of Progress Florida, but as someone raised and living in St. Petersburg with a strong love for the Sunshine City. Nothing less than the future of our community is at stake in the upcoming mayoral election.

Sen. Nelson deserves our thanks

Wed, 07/19/2017 - 9:31am

We get it: it’s easy to be cynical about politics and government these days. That’s why when one of our elected officials is fighting the good fight, often thanklessly, we want to lift that person up.

Statement on Gov. Scott signing HB 7069

Thu, 06/15/2017 - 4:13pm

"Today, Gov. Rick Scott ignored thousands of parents, teachers and community leaders who have spoken out against this travesty of a bill and embraced a secret and unaccountable process to deal an underhanded sucker punch to public education in our state."

Dangerously close to law

Wed, 06/14/2017 - 11:31am

The health care plan being assembled in the Senate is undoubtedly a travesty. What’s more - it’s an affront to representative democracy.

A sucker punch to Florida's public schools

Fri, 06/09/2017 - 4:13pm

Instead of being given a helping hand, Florida’s public schools are being dealt a big sucker punch. HB 7069, if signed by Gov. Scott, would devastate public schools, shortchange teachers, and finance a huge giveaway to corporate charter school chains.
